Gang Deterrence and Community Protection Act

Applying tougher prosecutions for street gangs is what this bill seeks to implement. An individual, involved with a street gang, may be sentenced to the following years for the crime:
- Assault with serious bodily harm will carry a 20 year minimum jail term.
- Kidnapping or aggravated assault will carry a 30 year minimum jail term.
- A killing of another person will result in either a life sentence or the death penalty.
This bill states, “The Attorney General is authorized to hire 94 additional Assistant United States attorneys to carry out the provisions of this section. Each attorney hired under this subsection shall be assigned to a high intensity interstate gang activity area.” The amount of $80 million over four years will be given to put forth this bill. H.R. 2857 was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
