An Internet safety education program will be created to train and educate children and parents on how to use the Internet, and protect children from harm on the web. Healthy Communities Act

Five year grants will be made to various partnerships in communities for the purpose of combating obesity. Under this bill a community partnership will be a hospital, school, health insurance companies, pediatricians, local governments, local employers, early childhood care providers, or other professions in the health industry. These partnerships will be formed to provide education in the form of exercise, and healthy eating to fight against obesity. An executive counsel will be created to oversee this program. A steering committee composed of local farmers, local restaurants, partnership members, and others will be used to give recommendations to the counsel. An amount of $10 million will be given for this bill in 2010, and money deemed necessary will be given in the years 2011 – 2015. H.R. 3144 was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Young Adults Financial Literacy Act

Competitive grants will be created for various institutions to create a program exploring financial literacy education for adults ages 15 – 24. This program will teach budgeting, debt reduction, saving, and investing. Students will also learn about foreclosures, predatory lending, bankruptcy, and credit card misuse. The total amount of $275 million will be set aside for this bill for the years 2010 – 2014. H.R. 3147 was referred to the Committee on Financial Services, and the Committee on Education and Labor.

Class Size Reduction

Standards to Provide Educational Achievement for Kids Act

Compared to some countries, the education of the US is lagging behind in math and science. Due to each state having its own academic standards, it becomes difficult to gauge how well students are doing in one state compared to other states. For example, states with lower standards in education may look as if they are doing better than states with higher educational standards. This bill brings forth the the attempt to unify the educational system through voluntary American education content standards, along with $611 million. S. 1231 was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
